3 Tips to rent the right mobile crane
Renting The Right Mobile Crane For Your Project Can Be A Little More Challenging Than It Sounds. So Much More Needs To Go Into The Deciding Factors Than Simply Lifting A Heavy Load.
If The Crane Is Too Small, The Lift Can Fail. If The Crane Is Too Big, You Have Wasted Thousands Of Rands On Capacity You Didn’t Need, And You May Even Have Had To Wait Weeks For The Necessary Permits To Move The Lift.
Many Intermittent Renters Make The Mistake Of Looking At The Weight Of The Load And Then Ordering A Slightly Bigger Crane. For Instance, When The Load Is 10 Tons, They Order A 15-Ton Crane. But This ‘Just-To-Be-Safe’ Thumb Suck Is Dangerous And May Not Even Comply With The OHS Act.
Here Are A Few Tips To Keep In Mind:
1. Did You Know That A Crane That Can Lift 50 Tons At Sea Level In Cape Town Might Not Necessarily Lift 50 Tons In Johannesburg? That’s Because The Air Is Thinner On The Highveld, And It Affects The Performance Of The Crane’s Engine And Hydraulic System, And It Also Affects The Aerodynamic Stability During Certain Types Of Boom Operations. The Difference Might Seem Small, But It Can Have A Huge Effect On The Load.
2. The Terrain Where The Crane Will Operate Also Needs Consideration. When The Crane Will Operate On Tarred Or Paved Surfaces, A Truck-Mounted Crane May Do The Job.
On A Mining Site Or Greenfield Construction Site Where The Road Is Compacted Soil, A Rough Terrain Crane Might Be Needed To Reach The Site And Do The Required Job. In Certain Cases, An All-Terrain Crane Might Be Needed Reach The Site. So, The Road And The Terrain Where The Lift Will Take Place Also Need To Be Taken Into Consideration.
3. More Important Than The Weight Of The Lift Is The Radius – The Distance From The Centre Of The Crane’s Rotation To The Centre Point Of Gravity Of The Load. The Radius Is The Primary Driver To Determine The Size Of The Required Mobile Crane.
For Instance, A 60-Ton Crane Can Lift 60 Tons, But Only If The Object Is Practically Touching The Bumper. If You Need To Lift A 2-Ton Object Over A High Wall, You Might Be Reaching 25 Metres Away. At That Radius, The Laws Of Leverage Mean You Might Need A 100-Ton Crane To Lift That 2-Ton Load.
Consider The Points Above And Ask Yourself, What Does The Road To And Surface At The Site Of The Lift Look Like, And Do You Need A Crane To Do A ‘Simple’ Lift, Or Does The Crane Have To Lift The Load And Move It Over A High Object?
